Keyboarding Computer / Document Formatting Standards

The Keyboarding/Document Formatting course is a continuation of the Keyboarding course. Student will prepare business and academic report, etc. The student will demonstrate a combination of input skills (advanced keyboarding, scanning, speech recognition, handwriting recognition, and the use of a mouse) in the production of mailable business documents. Industry production standards are emphasized. Formatting, typography and layout and design concepts are applied in document preparation of business letters, forms, invoices, manuscripts, and tabulated and columnar information. Proofreading and editing skills are applied.

            The student will develop and demonstrate effective input technology skills (advanced keyboarding, scanning, speech recognition, handwriting recognition, and the use of a mouse).

Standard: 2.0

            The student will create business documents, applying the appropriate formatting knowledge and skills.

Standard: 3.0

              The student will apply skills in processing business documents using new styles in various formats and lengths.

Standard 4.0

            The student will use input technology skills that adhere to ergonomic principles to develop acceptable speed and accuracy levels.

Standard 5.0

The student will research and apply typography, layout, design, and composition concepts and guidelines for document preparation.

Standard 6.0

            The student will apply input and formatting skills in creating reports and tables in various formats and lengths.

Standard 7.0

The student will research and apply knowledge of ethical and legal issues within the industry

Standard 8.0

            The student will apply concise styles, mailable standards and rules for grammar, spelling and punctuation creating business documents and reports that communicate the intended message.

Standard 9.0

            The student will compose, input, and format career portfolio documents for job interview.

Standard 10.0

            The student will perform their culmination project by completing a simulation that consists of business correspondence, reports, tables, etc., of varying degrees of difficulty.

Standard 11.0

            The student will develop and demonstrate human relations, self-management, organizational and professional leadership skills.

 


 

Course Description

The Keyboarding/Document Formatting course is a continuation of the Keyboarding course.             1.2    Apply effective procedures for formatting business documents through the use of a variety of input technologies, including voice and handwriting recognition tools in preparing business documents.

            1.3    Incorporate input technology skills in preparing a variety of business documents.

*       Input, format, edit, and revise a three-page business report using a variety of input technologies to include keying and voice recognition skills.

            3.3    Apply typography and layout and design rules (Gateway English II Standards 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 5.0).

The student:

*            Submits required types of documents in mailable form.

*            Organizes styles, applies format functions and layout and design techniques in document preparation.

*             Uses the proper technique to key correspondence.

*             Submits required documents in mailable form.

Sample Performance Task

            Key a copy of each style of documents and place it in a portfolio exhibiting samples of documents in mailable format.

            4.1    Manipulate the keyboard to key correct response patterns to increase speed.

            4.2       Demonstrate increase in straight copy speed and control (Gateway English II Standards 1.0, and 2.0).

            4.3       Use skills on a variety of copies--arranged, unarranged, handwritten, and rough draft (English II Gateway Standards 1.11).

            4.4    Interpret proofreader symbols and revise edited copy.

            4.5    Demonstrate appropriate 10-key touch method on keyboard’s numeric keypad.

Student Performance Indicators: Evidence Standard is Met

The student:

*            Keys a minimum of 45 NWAM on a 5-minute timed writing.

*            Applies proofreaders’ marks to indicate all errors in content, format, spelling, and grammar on a document printout.

*            Keys and formats mailable copies (no errors) from various types of copies to include but not limited to:

*        letters and memos,

*        problems applying vertical and horizontal centering with main, secondary, and columnar headings using the correct formatting tools, and

*        at least one mailable, average-length unarranged letter in mailable form in one 25-minute period.

*            Keys numeric data applying the touch system on the numeric keypad.

Sample Performance Task

*             Perform drills on sentences and paragraphs from straight copy, script, and rough-draft to develop speed.

*             Calculate mathematical problems using the touch system on the numeric keypad.

          5.8      Illustrate gradiations in shapes and blend colors.

          5.9      Illustrate methods of importing and exporting text and graphics.

The student:

*            Prepares a layout using typography specifications.

*            Applies layout and design principles using original and/or imported graphics (Gateway Algebra 5.0).

*            Applies spot color to graphics and text.

*            Applies typographical commands to text.

*            Rotates text and graphics (Gateway Algebra 5.0).

*            Proofs, edits, resizes, crops/manipulates copy and graphics (Gateway Algebra 2.0).

*            Prints or publishes hard copy that meets publication and design standards.

Sample Performance Task

*            Have students illustrate at least three font technologies. Using different backgrounds contrast and compare the typography of each.

*             Inputs a multi-page report that includes a table, reference citations, headers, and footers in mailable form.

*             Edits and retrieves copy, makes changes using the revision mode, proofs revisions, accepts revisions, saves and prints hard copy.

*             Designs documents such as a newsletter with three-columns, headers and footers.

Sample Performance Task

            Choose a topic to research and prepare a two-to-three page report. The report must have two-to-three references with a title page, a bibliography and footnotes or endnotes. Input, edit, revise, and print hard copy of the report.

Sample Performance Task

            Design and produce a business report on legal and ethical issues to include: issues and penalties for plagiarism, copied data with permission, and the process used in obtaining permission. Obtain formal permission for use of a quotations, etc.
